“Women should not laugh in public in Turkey” the Deputy Prime Minister has said in a speech on “moral corruption” in the country.
[The man] will not be a womaniser. He will be bound to his wife. He will love his children. [The woman] will know what is haram and not haram. She will not laugh in public. She will not be inviting in her attitudes and will protect her chasteness,” continued the Deputy Prime Minister.
“Where are our girls, who slightly blush, lower their heads and turn their eyes away when we look at their face, becoming the symbol of chastity?” he said.
Ekmeleddin İhsanoğlu, who is running against the Prime Minister, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, in August’s presidential elections, took to Twitter to argue against Mr Arınç‘s statement:
“Turkey needed women to laugh, he said, and the country needs to hear laughter more than anything.”
Laughter is a natural expression of happiness. Forbidding someone to laugh in public is the same as forbidding someone to be happy in public. This is wrong on so many levels! With so much going on in the world today, laughter is what keeps humanity going! Who would rather hear the sound of cars than a laughter of a woman?
Even though there are some good points the Deputy Prime Minister makes, like people having too many cars and the purity of love being destroyed by uncontrollable lust and addiction to superficial pleasures, CERTAINLY laughter is not the root cause of this.
In fact, laughter, sincerity and kindness can be the keys to solving these materialistic black holes that suck up our humanity. And Turkey, from all the countries in the world, should ask for more laughter not less.
