Carlos Taylor is one of the coaches that we found this month and we did a little interview with him. He impressed us with his beautiful point of view for life and humanity.
From being an employee in a successful company to creating his own coaching business, Carlos has been through thick and thin.
As he says, there is always a different way to look at things. He has been through an abusive childhood, divorce, being laid off from work, but through it all, he found a way to use each of those obstacles and grow into a better version of himself.
That’s why he is the best at what he does. He has been in the arena. He has personal experience and huge empathy for the people he coaches. Here is what he said.
Name: Carlos Taylor
Pillar: The Spirit, The Mind, The Body, The Heart
Who is this coach for: Anyone who wants to have guidance spiritually, mentally, physically, emotionally, in order to be their best self.
How they can help: By using active listening, keeping the client on course, and asking the right questions to get to their specific answers to their problems.
I reside in NYC so when the pandemic hit, we were really in the middle of it especially being in a crowded metropolitan city as New York.
At the time I was working in the Storage Industry, as a General Manager, and we were deemed an essential business so we stayed open throughout the pandemic.
Fortunately, although I went to work everyday, I was able to stay healthy. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic and the uncertainty of the times there were challenges at work that we had to overcome such as staff shortages due to sickness or employees resigning, and clients’ frustrations with their finances and ability to retain their storage space due to financial restraints.
Through it all we were able to navigate it, help a great deal of clients, and did so well as a company, due to our efforts, that our location earned several awards.
I believe that the pandemic has brought on a lot of anxieties, fears, and frustrations in people’s lives.
There are more mental issues, there is more depression.
People in general are trying to figure out how they fit into the grand scheme of this life and what is their purpose.
The biggest lessons are how divided we are in this country simply because we don’t trust each other and quite often have no empathy for one another.
Those who don’t believe in vaccinations against those who do, Those who want to wear masks against those who don’t, Republicans vs Democrats, Blacks vs the police.
We really need to learn to respect one another, start giving each other the benefit of the doubt, and be more open to listening to different points of views without screaming at one another. It’s sad.
Well, as a result of our efforts and the company’s success that I previously mentioned, especially during the heart of the pandemic, the company became bullet proof.
We survived the recession in 2008 and made a profit during the pandemic and outside investors started to notice.
The company was bought out in 2021 for billions of dollars and I was laid off after 30 years.
Thankfully, I was well recognized by the owners and executive staff and they gave me a good severance and bonus.
Many would have been angry but I realized that this was my opportunity to do something different, something that was more suited to who I truly was.
My previous employment came with a lot of responsibilities and long hours and I can remember some days walking to work thinking “life wasn’t meant to be like this”.
After some thought, I got certified as a Life Coach and built my website, 1lifeonlycoaching.com.
Life is full of obstacles.
I’ve gone through an abusive childhood, a divorce, getting laid off, and more, but there is always the other side of it.
I’ve learned how to be disciplined and independent as a result of my childhood trauma, my divorce taught me not to settle and today I have an amazing woman, whom I met at the beginning of the pandemic, and getting laid off has given me an opportunity to reset and take another path in my life.
This is the life we live but you have a choice to be bitter or you can persevere and see what’s ahead.
Coaching for me is about being your authentic self and holding space for the client.
It’s guiding a client through the process by asking the right questions and allowing them to come up with their answers because it’s only through the answer that they believe in that will get them through whatever situation they’re experiencing.
I coach clients in areas of health and fitness, overcoming addictions, spiritual, personal, and emotional matters.
Honestly, I’m not sure because I don’t compare myself with anyone else nor do I want to put anyone else’s style down.
I have a calm, patient approach, and I’m told that I’m fair, approachable, and know how to hold space for others but my style may not be a good fit for everyone.
They feel that they were heard, that they were helped.
That the experience was worth the journey.
Active listening, keeping the client on course, and asking the what, why, and hows to get to their specific answers to their problems.
Stop the madness!!!
We are all connected and it’s necessary to stay connected to each other in order to continue to grow.
Punishing, destroying, and hurting one another is only hurting ourselves.
We talk so much about being “woke” yet we are dead if we are not growing individually and collectively.
That there is always more to learn if you stay humble and open to learning.
It’s like working out.
I’ve had good success in my life with training myself but there is always something to learn that can make my body better.
It’s the same in life.
I think life is about taking the obstacles, learning from them, processing them, and then leaving the bitterness behind and moving forward.
